The foundation stone for the construction of the new “Teatro Alighieri” was laid in September 1840 after it was decided that, instead of restoring the old “Comunicativo” theatre, an entirely new building would be constructed, in an area that, albeit very central, had up until then been on the margins of city life, almost unused and consequently run-down; this was known as Piazzetta degli Svizzeri, an irregularly shaped open space occupied by mediocre, dilapidated buildings.

Apparently for financial reasons and the crisis that followed, the opening only took place on the evening of 15 May 1852. The public flocked from all quarters to see this great work of art. At that time, the Alighieri could be considered one of the best (and best-equipped) theatres in Italy.

The building is neoclassical in plan, not so very different from the Venetian model of the La Fenice Theatre, at least in its principal features.
