The museum is located on the first floor of the vast Archiepiscopal Palace in Ravenna and contains numerous works of art from the old cathedral and other buildings now destroyed. The famous ivory throne of Maximian is found here. This is one of the world’s most famous ivory pieces and is the work of 6th century Byzantine artists. One of Ravenna’s UNESCO monuments is here, the Oratory of Saint Andrew (or archiepiscopal chapel), which is built in a Greek cross style decorated with beautiful early 6th century mosaics. Recently re-opened with a new organization of the materials, the Archiepiscopal Museum contains one of the largest collections the Curia’s ancient works.
