The Ecomuseum is an emerging museum that began its research and recovery work in 1985, with the primary purpose of salvaging and documenting a wealth of expertise relating to life lived between dry land and the marshland. Special attention is given to the ancient techniques of using the marsh grasses, developed in the small community of Villanova Bagnacavallo, from the 14th century to the 1970s.
The research work, conducted by the Associazione Culturale Civilta’ delle Erbe Palustri, highlights the need not to lose a variety of processing techniques of immense value: a generational legacy which, if forgotten, would spell the end of a unique form of art, the weaving of marshland grasses and plants, using one’s bare hands or rudimentary tools.
This museum, unique in its kind, restores joints, weavings, wickerwork, wefts and spun fibres. It is located in a late 19th century school building and is organized into six exhibition rooms, and also includes a teaching room and a small pond.
