This was originally the cathedral of the Arian Church of Ravenna during Theodoric’s reign and was dedicated to “Aghia Anastasis”, the Resurrection of Christ. With the return of the Byzantines, in the second half of the 6th century, it was reconsecrated for Catholic worship by Archbishop Agnello and dedicated to St. Theodore; only later did it assume its present name of Basilica dello Spirito Santo (Basilica of the Holy Spirit) because, according to legend, the bishops were chosen by the Holy Spirit in a ritual based on the flight of doves which took place in this very basilica.

The church today has an appearance not unlike the original, while the façade is dominated by the 16th century portico.
