The Fortress of Riolo is a military fortification that follows the development of late mediaeval offensive techniques. It belongs to the type known as “transitional”, in which mediaeval and Renaissance architectural features are combined.

The Fortress forms the heart of the late mediaeval village. Because of its importance, the village was fortified in the 16th century by the Bolognesi and Sforza families; its imposing ramparts are a splendid example of Renaissance military architecture. The oldest part consists of a rectangular tower, which served as the defensive centre of the castle, surrounded by walls, which was then incorporated into the current keep.

Its greatest military effectiveness was seen during the tenure of Girolamo Riario and Caterina Sforza, after 1481.

The route that traverses the perimeter walls of the Castle of Riolo offers beautiful landscape views but the ancient walls are home to reminders of the historical events that have occurred in the locality, in the form of archaeological finds, models and interactive multimedia displays.
