Constructed between 1457 and 1470 by the Venetian government, this fortress was originally part of the city walls.

Today, the complex of the Fortress of Brancaleone – reduced with respect to the original plan because of the partial demolition ordered by the Pontificial Government – has a beautiful public park where open-air concerts, events and film screenings take place in the summer.

The fortress consists of two parts: the fort and the citadel.

The former is a broad square that covers over 2,000 square metres, with a massive circular tower at each of the four corners joined by curtain walls. The latter occupies an area of 14,000 square metres and is protected by a moat, drawbridges and walls. It has a fortified gate and circular towers at two corners with an adjoining semicircular curtain wall.
